Client Background

The National Church of England Academy is a successful, dynamic secondary academy, offering an all-round education for students from 11 to 19. The academy began life as a small school in 1788 and has served the community of Hucknall ever since. They developed from these humble beginnings into the successful, diverse academy that exists and thrives today.

The Challenge

Ready in time for the return of pupils and staff, the National Church of England were undergoing an IT upgrade involving new switches and IP telephony equipment. Subsequently, the Academy needed a fibre optic backbone solution to support the new network hardware demands of up to 10Gbps.

What Comfinity Did

Prior to the installation, Comfinity conducted an initial on-site survey to establish the feasibility of installation, map cabling routes, determine distance limitations and above all to ensure the solution met the needs of the staff and pupils. Working closely with the Academy’s IT team and facilities manager, a scope of works and timescale was agreed upon. The project was split into two phases, the first phase was the installation of the fibre optic cables to link all cabinets across the site and the second phase involved additional Cat 6 network outlets to accommodate the newly implemented telephony system.

The Solution

Appointed by the Minster Trust for Education, Comfinity installed an Excel Enbeam OM4 fibre optic backbone consisting of over 1,600 metres of multi-mode internal and external cables being pulled through a number of high-level complex routes and underground ducts. Each comms cabinet is linked with an 8-core fibre optic cable from the main server room in a star topology and fusion spliced end-to-end onto LC connectors.

As part of the second phase of works, individual Cat 6 cables were installed throughout numerous staff offices and classrooms to support the new IP telephony system. All cabling was terminated onto Excel Category 6 UTP office modules and fully tested using a calibrated Fluke Networks DSX-5000 Cable Analyzer.

A number of wall-mounted cabinets were installed throughout several of the buildings as well as a cabinet tidy across all existing cabinets using 0.25mtr patch leads.
